5th Grade Social Studies
North America History
5th grade will be traveling back in time to learn about: how civilization began in our continent, explore the world with the great explorers, discover how the east met the west, actively learn the steps taken by the colonist to become a new country, study how the government works, travel with Lewis and Clark through the new world, and end with the industrial revolution.
Unit One: Native Americans
Who were the first people to live in the North American continent? How was their way of life? What tools did they use? In this unit, students are learning about how the land decides and shapes the early people's way of life. Students will explore Teotihuacan, Mayas, and the Aztecs. Then we will move north and study various areas.

Unit Two: The Age of Exploration
5th grade will learn how the west meets the east. It all began with trading. Students will learn about two ancient cultures China, West African, and Cordoba, Spain. We will follow the Vikings, Marco Polo, and Portugal as they begin exploring new places. We will end with our explorer simulation: who will reach the Americas first?

Unit Six: The Constitution
The USA is formed, but how will our government work? Students will learn how style of government, who and how it was created, and several of our early founders. Students will learn the three branches of our government, the Bill of Rights, and the divisions of power.

In this unit, students will be learning about our economy and how the world operates. Key words: Wants, needs, goods, services, supply, demand, producers, and consumers.
Unit Two: Geography
Students will be learning about landforms and natural resources of the USA. They will learn valuable map skills and be able to describe the land found in the USA.
Unit Three-Unit Six: Regions (State capitals and locations)
In each unit, students will focus on one region of the USA. In each region, they will learn
